Soul Lineage vs. Blood Lineage
We tend to think of ancestry as biological — the chain of genetic inheritance running back through parents, grandparents, great-grandparents. This matters. But it is not the only kind of ancestry, and for many people, it is not the most formative kind.
Soul lineage is the other thread: the teachers, thinkers, traditions, and historical movements that have shaped how you see the world and what you are becoming. As one voice in the “Before We Were White” tradition puts it: “For me my soul lineage is more potent than my blood lineage. My soul lineage is James Hillman and Carl Jung and on and on into indigenous mind. That’s my ancestral line and I count on them every day.”
The Wider Meaning of Ancestor
An animist understanding extends ancestry even further. Everything that has come before us is ancestor. The rocks. The rivers. The trees. The 4-billion-year lineage of life on this planet that produced the conditions for your existence — this too is ancestry. You belong to a massive ecosystem of relationship, not an isolated family tree.
This does not diminish biological ancestry. It expands the question of belonging beyond what bloodlines can carry.
Why This Matters for Men
Men doing ancestral recovery often hit a wall: their biological lineage includes people who caused harm, people who were harmed, people whose stories are lost or deliberately buried. The blood line alone can feel like insufficient ground.
Soul lineage opens another door. A man can claim as ancestor anyone who has shaped his values, his seeing, his way of being in the world — regardless of blood relation. This is not escapism from biological heritage. It is recognition that belonging is constructed from multiple threads.
Ancestral Recovery — Roots Deeper Than Whiteness explores the work of reconnecting to specific family history. The Seventh Fire Prophecy speaks of gathering scattered fragments — including scattered lineages — into something whole.
The question becomes: Who do you count as your people? And the answer need not be bounded by genetics.
